We have a special 4th of July paleo meal plan this week. It features a couple of recipes for the grill that are sure to satisfy.
Some Quick Thoughts About Living Without Power
This past week was interesting. Some big storms rolled through Minnesota and 70 mph winds blew over 400+ trees. We were without power for three days. Crazy!
I've never experienced three days without power but it was eye opening. The mind is so interesting. Having no power actually caused me to think about human behavior and why we really do what we do.
For example, even though I knew we had no power I would still walk into the bathroom and hit the light switch. Amelia was doing the same thing. Our brains were running a script on complete autopilot. It's the same feeling you get when you take a drive that you've taken a million times and you end up at your destination without recollecting any of the journey.
Question all your behavior. Did you choose your behaviors or have they chosen you?
I also learned that refrigeration is nice to have. We had a bunch of grass-fed meat in our deep freeze that we had to evacuate on day three. No worries, no quality beef was lost.
Another thing I realized is that avoiding screens and unnatural light at night causes your body to naturally get tired and ready for bed. I thought this was a major benefit. Instead of being on the computer or reading on my phone I was forced to write in my journal or read a "real" book. I was in bed by nine which is early for me.
Try shutting down earlier in the day then what you're used to. Enjoy the company of your family without huddling around the TV. Amelia and I had the windows open, some candles burning, a deck of cards and our trusty windup weather radio. We realized that we had all we need. Everything else can be thrown into the nice to have column... Well, I guess we would like to have refrigeration :)
