What can you eat on the paleo diet

If you've been following paleo for any amount of time it's likely that you've received this question from friends, family and co-workers.

"So, what can you eat on the paleo diet?"

In fact, you probably asked the same question at some point in time.

The funny thing is, people expect you to give them a really short list of foods that are "allowed". They want to believe that the Paleo diet is just like all the other fad diets. Restrictive in nature and short on long-term results.

Too bad for them that the Paleo diet is neither of those things.

One issue that people come up against when starting the paleo diet is changing their way of thinking about nutrition. For a really long time we have had the message of "eat more healthy whole grains" pounded into our heads from the government and the media.

Did we ever step back and realize that we were being conditioned to follow that advice? Listening to the same message over and over again, as our health deteriorated and we got fatter and fatter.

We were never meant to eat the processed junk that has now become part of the SAD (Standard American Diet). The fact is, SAD is sad! It's no wonder that our waistlines and our overall health are suffering.

What can you eat on the paleo diet? Answer, a lot of delicious food!

1. Good sources of animal protein. Think beef, lamb, poultry, pork, bison, turkey, venison, ostrich, rabbit and the list goes on. Try to find animal protein that is raised organically and that is grass fed and free ranging.

2. Vegetables and fruit. The SAD protocol will tell you to eat only about 3 cups of vegetables a day. We say you need to try and double that. Strive to get a lot of green, leafy vegetables in your diet. Why? One, because you'll feel awesome. Two, because you'll be healthier. If you don't believe me then you might need to watch this video. As for fruit, we say eat it moderately and stick to things that are lower on the glycemic index like berries, apples and pears.

3. Healthy fats. I get so frustrated when people tell me they're trying to lose weight by watching how much fat they eat. Arggghhh! Listen to me! Eating dietary fat will not lead to you getting fat. It's been tested, over and over and over again. Please read Good Calories Bad Calories and Wheat Belly. So make sure to eat whole eggs, avocados, nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, butter from grass-fed cows and ghee from grass-fed cows.

4. Fish. We don't eat enough fish. Fish, especially of the fatty variety like salmon, is packed with heart healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. It's a great source of protein, it's easy to prepare and it's delicious.

QUICK TIP: We discovered that Trader Joe's has a great selection of frozen fish filets. Most of it is wild caught which is the best kind. We've found salmon, mahi mahi, tuna steaks and swordfish. Eat more fish and your body will thank you.

The Big Obstacle to the Paleo Lifestyle

The big obstacle is changing your thinking from one of scarcity to one of abundance. This is truly important if you're going to change to living a paleo lifestyle.

If you're clicking along successfully with your Paleo lifestyle then you already know that this is not a lifestyle of restrictive eating and counting calories.

But for someone who is new to Paleo and has tried every fad diet under the sun, it's understandable that they might be skeptical. I mean, how can you eat all that fat and not be bursting at the seams?
